Burial mound, Dante's Tomb, Ravenna, Italy
Mound where remains of the medieval poet Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321, were buried March 1944-December 1945 for protection during WWII, before being returned to his tomb, inside a temple-style monument built 1781 by Camillo Morigi, in Neoclassical style, next to the Basilica di San Francesco, in Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The ivy-covered mound is in the garden next to the tomb. Dante died in Ravenna and his funeral took place inside the basilica. Picture by Manuel Cohen
