Burial mounds, Birka, Bjorko island, Sweden
Burial mounds containing tombs, both individual and communal, at Birka, a Viking village founded c. 750 and abandoned c. 975, on Bjorko island in Lake Malaren, Sweden. There are over 2, 500 graves on the island, including many skeleton graves, signifying christianity, but also cremation graves, barrow graves, chamber tombs and boat graves. Birka was a Viking trading post housing up to 1, 000 people and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
