Royal Citadel of Buyukkale, a fortress and royal residence built on a ridge, Hittite, at Hattusa archaeological site, near Bogazkale, Corum, Anatolia, Turkey. The fortress was built on ruins of earlier buildings and served as the seat of Hittite kings for hundreds of years. Hattusa was the capital of the Hittite empire, built in the late Bronze Age from c. 1650 BC, on an older Chalcolithic settlement founded 6th millennium BC.
