Altar in the Cappella dei Principi, or Chapel of the Princes, mausoleum of the Medici family, grand dukes of Tuscany, part of the Medici Chapels, adjoining the Basilica di San Lorenzo, in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. The chapel was designed by Matteo Nigetti and built 1604-40 under Ferdinando I de Medici, with octagonal plan, large cupola and a marble and commesso interior. It contains 6 sarcophagi in porphyry and bronze statues. The historic centre of Florence is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
