Carthage

Carthage was founded in 814 BC by the Phoenicians who fought three Punic Wars against the Romans over this immensely important Mediterranean harbour. The Romans finally conquered the city in 146 BC. Subsequently it was conquered by the Vandals and the Byzantine Empire. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. This 10, 000 seat theatre was probably built in the mid 2nd century. The tiered seats are supported by vaults rather than leaning directly on the hillside behind. Destroyed by Vandals in the 5th century and excavated in the late 19th-early 20th centuries, it now again hosts theatre performances and music festivals. Picture by Manuel Cohen
