Carthage

Low angle view of Chapel, Roman Amphitheatre, Carthage, Tunisia, pictured on January 28, 2008. Carthage was founded in 814 BC by the Phoenicians who fought three Punic Wars against the Romans over this important Mediterranean harbour. The Romans conquered the city in 146 BC. Subsequently it was conquered by the Vandals and the Byzantine Empire. Today the site is a UNESCO World Heritage. The amphitheatre was built in the 2nd century, but this chapel was added later and dedicated to the Christian Martyrs St Perpetua and St Felicitas, who are thought to have been martyred at the amphitheatre in 203.
