Castello Ursino, built 1239-50 by Riccardo da Lentini for Frederick II Holy Roman Emperor, for sea defence and as a royal fortress, in Catania, Sicily, Italy. Catania was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC and was rebuilt in the 12th century after an earthquake, then again after an earthquake in 1693. Much of the Old Town features late Baroque architecture and the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
