Hammerbeam roof in Norwegian oak, in king James IV's Great Hall, built 1511, used for banquets and state functions, then as a barracks after 1650, in Edinburgh castle, Scotland. The castle was begun in the 11th century under king Malcolm III and was the residence of the rulers of Scotland. It has also served as an arsenal, mint and prison, and is now a tourist attraction, museum and regimental headquarters and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
