Charlemagne stained glass window, Chartres cathedral, France

Constantine, Emperor of the East, offers 3 gold and silver reliquaries to Charlemagne as a gesture of thanks for delivering the Holy Land. They may contain the crown of thorns, a piece of the true cross and the shroud of Christ. This section may attest to the authenticity of Chartres relics. Chartres cathedral was built 1194-1250 and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Most of its windows date from 1205-40 although a few earlier 12th century examples are also intact.
