Hiker reading commemorative flags with printed words, on the 13km Chemin Walter Benjamin, opened 2007, a footpath following the route taken by the German philosopher on 24th September 1940, from Banyuls to Portbou in Spain, while fleeing Nazism, Banyuls, Pyrenees-Orientales, Occitanie, France. Benjamin was led by Resistance member Lisa Fittko to Portbou on the Spanish border, where he committed suicide for fear of being apprehended by Nazis. Picture by Manuel Cohen
