Chinoiserie wallpaper, Abbotsford House, Borders, Scotland

Hand painted chinoiserie wallpaper, detail of people in garden, in the Chinese drawing room, in Abbotsford House, built 1817-25 by Sir Walter Scott, 1771-1832, Scottish writer and poet, near Melrose, in the Borders, Scotland. The wallpaper was a gift from Scotta's cousin Hugh Scott, who worked for the East India Company. The building is in Scottish Baronial style and includes Scott's personal collections of books, furniture and Scottish historical artefacts, making it a centre for European Romanticism. The Scott family still own the building, which is open to the public as a tourist attraction. Picture by Manuel Cohen
