Christopher Columbus sculpture, 1994, in gilded bronze, by Frank Meisler, 1925-2018, commemorating the voyage of Columbus to the New World in 1492, and on the reverse, shown here, the story of the expulsion of Jews from Spain under the Catholic Monarchs in the same year, in the Call Jueu or Jewish Quarter, in the old town of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. On this side are depicted navigational instruments, an astrolabe of rabbi Abraham Zacuto, a map and Talmud scholar Moshe ben Nahman. The Jewish community in Girona grew from the 9th century and flourished from the 12th century, when the city housed an important Kabbalistic school, until their expulsion in 1492 under the Catholic Monarchs.
