Church of the Holy Mother of God, Khor Virap monastery, Armenia
Surb Astvatsatsin chapel or Church of the Holy Mother of God, with 12-sided tholobate, built 1662, on the original apostolic monastery built 642 by Nerses III the Builder, at Khor Virap, at Pokr Vedi near Artashat on the Ararat Plain in Armenia. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a dungeon under the chapel, his release in 301 AD resulting in Armenia becoming a christian country. Picture by Manuel Cohen
