Citadel of Carcassonne, a fortress built in the Roman then medieval period and restored by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc 1853-79, aerial view, Aude, Occitanie, France. Behind is the Chateau Comtal, fortress of the viscounts of Carcassonne, built early 12th century and expanded 1240-50. The fortified city has 2 outer walls defended by 52 towers and barbicans, and a drawbridge across a moat leads to the castle keep. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
