Cliffs, Mainland, Orkney, Scotland
View to cliffs on Mainland and the Kitchener Memorial, a war memorial built 1926 commemorating the sinking of HMS Hampshire in 1916 by German mines, seen from the Brough of Birsay, a small uninhabited tidal island, off Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. On the island is a Norse village, built over a Pictish settlement, consisting of houses, longhouses, saunas and a 12th century Romanesque church. The island was inhabited from 6th century by early christians, then Picts, then the Norse. Picture by Manuel Cohen
