Cloister, Iona Abbey and Nunnery, Iona, Inner Hebrides
Cloister, built on the north side of the abbey church with colonnaded galleries, at Iona Abbey and Nunnery, on the island of Iona, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. Iona abbey was founded by the Celtic monk St Columba in 563 AD. A stone abbey was begun c. 800 AD and the Benedictine monastery and Augustinian nunnery were built in the 13th century. St Aidan was a monk here in the 7th century and the Book of Kells produced here. Picture by Manuel Cohen
