Foundations of colonial buildings with holes for batons to support structures above, built from, on and in the pre-Columbian buildings, destroying and damaging them, excavations at the Templo Mayor, Mexico City, Mexico. The Main Temple was a stepped pyramid temple topped with 2 shrines dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc, on the Recinto Sagrado or ceremonial area of Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec Mexica people. It was rebuilt 7 times until it was destroyed by Hernan Cortes in 1521. Its remains have been excavated since 1978 and it is part of the Mexico City UNESCO World Heritage Site.
