Convicts well, Mont-Louis Citadel, Pyrenees-Orientales

Puits des forcats, a convicts well used to collect drinking water, at the Citadelle de Mont-Louis, Mont-Louis, Pyrenees-Orientales, Occitanie, France. Soldiers would stand inside the wheel and walk forwards, making it turn, which operated pulleys, lifting buckets of water from a well. The fortress was built in the 17th century, designed 1679 by Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban for king Louis XIV, along with the new town of Mont-Louis and its defensive ramparts.
