Santa Croce Crucifix, polychrome wood sculpture, c.1406-10, by Donatello, 1386-1466, in the Cappella Bardi di Vernio in the left transept of the Basilica di Santa Croce, the largest Franciscan church in the world, founded by St Francis of Assisi, begun 1294, consecrated 1443, and remodelled in the 16th century by Giorgio Vasari, October 2023, in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. A community of Franciscan friars still lives and works at the basilica. The historic centre of Florence is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
