The Cutting Scene, Native American Mandan O-Kee-Pa Ceremony, oil on canvas, by George Catlin (1796-1872), in the Denver Art Museum, Denver, Colorado, USA. The young Mandan Indians were willing participants in the O-Kee-Pa, a sacred ceremony held to ensure their community's prosperity. The men were suspended by splints inserted into their chest and back muscles (a procedure that, although painful, didn't cause lasting injury). These men would have considered it a great honour to take part in the O-Kee-Pa, at the end of which they were recognised as warriors of courage and fortitude
