Deir el-Medina, Egypt
Deir el-Medina, site of the workers village for artisans building the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, 18th - 20th dynasties, New Kingdom, at the Theban Necropolis, Thebes, Luxor, Egypt. The village contained 68 houses along a central road. In the centre is the Temple of Hathor, built 3rd century BC in the Ptolemaic era by Ptolemy IV Philopator. The site was excavated by Ernesto Schiaparelli 1905-9 and Bernard Bruyere 1922-51. Thebes is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
