The Delphinion, or main sanctuary, Archaic period, dedicated to Apollo Delphinios (Apollo of the Dolphins, protector of ships and harbours), Miletus, Aydin, Turkey. This was a rectangular temple bordered by two-aisled stoas at the north, east and south. The round base in the centre of the courtyard seen here is thought to belong to a Roman-era heroon (temple of a hero). Miletus was an Ancient Greek city on the Western coast of Anatolia. Although settlement began here millennia ago, its heyday was in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city was finally abandoned in the Ottoman era when the harbours silted up.
