Derinkuyu, Cappadocia, Turkey

Passages cut in the bedrock at Derinkuyu, an underground city built on several levels housing 20, 000 people plus livestock, originally begun by the Phrygians in the 7th century BC but greatly expanded 5th - 8th century AD in the Byzantine era, near Derinkuyu, Nevsehir, Cappadocia, Turkey. The city held houses, oil presses, stables, storage rooms, a well, chapels and a large religious school room with barrel vaulted ceiling.
