Decorated door of the Thing-hall, a reconstructed 30m long house with wattle and daub walls and thatched roof, housing sleeping area, entrance hall, main hall and kitchen, belonging to a wealthy family, at Ribe Viking Centre, a reconstructed Viking village and living history site, at Ribe, Syddanmark, Jutland, Denmark. The Thing was a council or assembly which met to resolve disputes democratically. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark, founded c. 700 AD, and was a Viking trade centre and had strong christian connections through archbishop Ansgar from 9th century. Picture by Manuel Cohen
