Dovecotes, Soganli Valley, Cappadocia, Turkey

Dovecotes, originally built by monks who lived here 9th - 13th century, on cliffs in the Soganli valley, Yesilhisar, Kayseri, Cappadocia, Central Anatolia, Turkey. The monks and current residents use the birds droppings as fertiliser for crops. The small holes are painted with white borders to attract the birds, and roosting sites are built inside small caves, so guano can be collected each morning. Picture by Manuel Cohen
