Effigy of Richard the Lionheart, Fontevraud Abbey

Royal tomb of Richard the Lionheart in the nave of the Abbey Church at Fontevraud Abbey, Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, Loire Valley, Maine-et-Loire, France. Richard the Lionheart, son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, ruled as King Richard I of England 1189-1199. As a member of the House of Plantagenet, he was a benefactor of the monastery. His heart was buried at Rouen cathedral and his body buried here, although his remains were scattered by Huguenots in 1562 when the Abbey was sacked. The effigy is carved in stone and was painted, Richard wears his crown and his robes are blue and red. Fontevraud Abbey was founded in 1100 by Robert of Arbrissel and became a double monastery for both monks and nuns, led by an Abbess. The Order was dissolved during the French Revolution.
