Elephant Fountain, Catania, Sicily, Italy
Elephant Fountain, or Fontana dell'Elefante, 1735-37, by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, on Piazza del Duomo, in Catania, Sicily, Italy. The fountain consists of a basalt elephant known as u Liotru, symbol of the city, a granite obelisk, marble plinth and basin, and cross. Catania was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC and was rebuilt in the 12th century after an earthquake, then again after an earthquake in 1693. Much of the Old Town features late Baroque architecture and the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
