Fields, Al Qarnah, Luxor, Egypt
Irrigated fields at Al Qarnah, or New Qurna, on the west bank of the river Nile, opposite Luxor, Egypt. The 3 villages of Al Qarnah were built 1946-52 by Hassan Fathi as part of a government relocation scheme, in the fertile Nile floodplain, and water is channeled between fields to support crops. Behind are the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, containing royal tombs, 18th - 20th dynasty, New Kingdom, built 16th to 11th century BC, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
