Fields, Al Qarnah, Luxor, Egypt
Irrigated fields at Al Qarnah, or New Qurna, on the west bank of the river Nile, opposite Luxor, Egypt. The 3 villages of Al Qarnah were built 1946-52 by Hassan Fathi as part of a government relocation scheme, in the fertile Nile floodplain, and water is channeled between fields to support crops. Behind is the Valley of the Queens, containing tombs of royal women, 18th - 20th dynasty, New Kingdom, built 16th to 11th century BC, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
