The Cathedral was begun in 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio. Its dome, by Filippo Brunelleschi, was completed in 1436, and the Bell Tower, 1267-1337, was designed by Giotto. The facade remained incomplete until the 19th century. The walls are constructed in polychrome marble. Florence, capital of Tuscany, is world famous for its Renaissance art and architecture. Its historical centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982
