The lion was made to match a Roman sculpture which originally stood by the staircase at the Villa Medici. When the Villa was sold by the Grand Duke of Tuscany the lions were moved to the Piazza della Signoria, Florence, where they flank the steps to the Loggia dei Lanzi. The Palazzo Vecchio, begun in 1299, was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio (1245-1302). Florence, capital of Tuscany, is world famous for its Renaissance art and architecture.
