Fresco, Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis, Kakopetria, Cyprus
Forty martyrs of Sebaste, or Holy Forty, fresco, 12th century, detail, in Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis, or the Church of St Nicholas of the Roof, a Byzantine monastery built 11th century, near Kakopetria, in the Solea valley of the Troodos mountains, Cyprus. The fresco depicts a legion of Roman soldiers martyred for their christian faith in 320 AD, by being made to stand naked in a frozen pond. The katholikon or monastery church was built in cross-in-square style with a pitched roof added later, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
