Anastasis, or resurrection of Christ, and the Harrowing of Hell, with Jesus on the broken gates, pulling Adam from hell, fresco, late 13th - early 14th century, in Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis, or the Church of St Nicholas of the Roof, a Byzantine monastery built 11th century, near Kakopetria, in the Solea valley of the Troodos mountains, Cyprus. The katholikon or monastery church was built in cross-in-square style with a pitched roof added later, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
