Fresco, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Ravenna, Italy
Our Lady of the Tumours, fresco worshipped by those suffering from swellings or tumours, moved in the late 17th century to a side altar, in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a church built early 6th century under bishop Ecclesius, possibly on the site of his family home, in Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The church was renovated in 1671 in Baroque style by Pietro Grossi. Its original Byzantine mosaics have been destroyed. Picture by Manuel Cohen
