Beheading of 7 Franciscan monks in Ceuta (now a Spanish enclave near Morocco) in 1227, fresco, c. 1621, by Vincenzo Georgetti, in the Cappella di Sant Antonio, in the Chiesa Nuova, built 1615 in Renaissance style on the site of the assumed birthplace of St Francis in Assisi, Umbria, Italy. The site was bought in 1613 by Antonio de Trejo with a gift of money from King Philip III of Spain, and the New Church built to honour the saint. Assisi and its basilica and friary are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
