Fresco decoration with theatrical mask on the walls of the atrium, in the Casa di Casca Longus, or House of Casca Longus, Pompeii, Italy. The house is thought to be owned by Casca Longus, who also owned shops and workshops nearby. The fresco is in the Third Style of Roman wall painting, 20E10 BC, characterised by an ornamental elegance in figurative and colourful decoration. Pompeii is a Roman town which was destroyed and buried under 4-6 m of volcanic ash in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Buildings and artefacts were preserved in the ash and have been excavated and restored. Pompeii is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
