Virgin and child, fresco, in the left apse of the church at Gumusler monastery, or Eski Gumusler, a rock-cut cave monastery built 10th century, Byzantine, in Gumusler, Nigde, Cappadocia, Central Anatolia, Turkey. The Virgin appears to be smiling, which is thought to have been altered during restoration. She also seems to have 3 hands. The monastery is based around a central courtyard, with the church on the north side. The church is filled with frescoes by 3 painters. Picture by Manuel Cohen
