Fresco, Panagia Asinou Church, Nikitari, Cyprus
40 martyrs of Sebaste, or Holy Forty, fresco, detail, 12th century, in the western niche on the north wall of the nave of the Panagia Asinou Church, or Panagia Forviotissa, a Byzantine church, originally the church of Forvion monastery, built from 1005, founded 1099, dedicated to the Virgin of Forvia, near Nikitari, in the Troodos mountains, Cyprus. The fresco depicts a legion of Roman soldiers martyred for their christian faith in 320 AD, by being made to stand naked in a frozen pond. The church is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
