God sends Gabriel to the Virgin, detail with angels flanking painting of God the Father enthroned, fresco, detail, 1306, by Giotto di Bondone, c. 1267-1337, above the chancel arch in the Cappella degli Scrovegni, or Scrovegni Chapel, at the Monastero degli Eremitani, in Padua, Veneto, Italy. On the right is the archangel Gabriel from the annunciation to Mary, and on the left the angel from the annunciation to Joseph. The chapel was built by Enrico Scrovegni as a private oratory and funerary monument, consecrated 1303. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
