Frescoes, Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis, Kakopetria, Cyprus
Nave of the Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis, or the Church of St Nicholas of the Roof, a Byzantine monastery built 11th century, near Kakopetria, in the Solea valley of the Troodos mountains, Cyprus. In the centre is the 17th century iconostasis with frescoes to either side of St Peter and St Paul, 1633, and sanctuary ceiling behind. On the right are St John the Baptist and St John the Merciful, 14th century. The katholikon or monastery church was built in cross-in-square style with a pitched roof added later, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
