Garni Gorge, Garni, Kotayk, Armenia
Garni Gorge, with cliffs formed of basalt columns, at Garni, Kotayk, Armenia. Above the gorge is the Hellenistic Garni Temple, built 1st - 2nd century AD by king Tiridates I, either as a pagan temple to the sun god Mithra, or as a tomb, rebuilt from rubble 1969-75, after the original was destroyed in an earthquake in 1679. It forms part of the Garni Historical and Cultural Museum Reserve and the gorge is listed as a natural monument. Picture by Manuel Cohen
