Gilded capital of column in Romanesque Nave, 11th century, Eglise St Germain des Pres, Paris, France. 19th century copy of original now housed in Musee national du Moyen Age (National Museum of the Middle Ages). The capitals represent the creative genius of Romanesque sculptors in the Ile-de-France. Founded as an Abbey in 542 St Germain des Pres was destroyed several times by the Normans and reconsecrated 1163 by Pope Alexander III.
