Grinding pot, Visitor Centre Museum, Skara Brae, Mainland
Pot used to grind ochre, with traces of red ochre in the hollow, which was mixed with fat to make a paint to decorate stones, pots, skin and clothes, discovered at Skara Brae, in the Visitor Centre museum at Skara Brae, a Neolithic village occupied 3180-2500 BC consisting of 9 stone houses and a workshop, linked by passages, on Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. These pots were made from stone, whalebone and oyster shells. Skara Brae is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
