Heissa Island, Aswan, Egypt

Village on Heissa Island, in the river Nile, Aswan, Egypt. The island was partially submerged after the building of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s when many villages were flooded and islands submerged. The locals who stayed here preserve a traditional way of life, speaking the local Kenzi language. This is the last remaining Nubian island in the Nile. Picture by Manuel Cohen
