Iona Abbey and Nunnery, on the island of Iona, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. On the right is St John's Cross or the Iona Cross, a replica of the original 8th century cross which is in Iona Abbey Museum. Iona abbey was founded by the Celtic monk St Columba in 563 AD. A stone abbey was begun c. 800 AD and the Benedictine monastery and Augustinian nunnery were built in the 13th century.
