Ionic Stoa, Miletus, Aydin, Turkey

The Ionic Stoa or portico, built 50 AD, on the Sacred Way, Miletus, Aydin, Turkey. The stoa was built by Capito V, a high ranking official during the reign of Emperor Claudius. It was erected by the assembly on a dais reached by six steps. This was supported by Ionic columns, and behind it were shops. The Seljuk baths can be seen in the distance. Miletus was an Ancient Greek city on the Western coast of Anatolia. Although settlement began here millennia ago, its heyday was in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city was finally abandoned in the Ottoman era when the harbours silted up. Picture by Manuel Cohen
