Newgrange was built by a farming community in the Boyne Valley during the Neolithic or New Stone Age. Originally classified as a passage tomb, it is now recognised as an ancient Temple, with astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance. The large kidney shaped mound is retained at the base by 97 kerbstones, some of which are carved with megalithic decoration. The Bru na Boinne complex, made up of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Picture by Manuel Cohen
