Isa Bey Hamam, Selcuk, Izmir, Turkey

Isa Bey Hamam, late 14th century baths built during the reign of Isa Bey, with the Isa Bey Mosque, 1374-75, in the distance, Selcuk, near Ephesus, Izmir, Turkey. The baths consist of an elongated rectangular structure with a central domed room, the hot bathing room, which was surrounded by other smaller bathing rooms, each with a specific purpose (warm room, cold room, changing room). Only 5 of the original 10 domes remain. The interiors would have been stuccoed and painted, with stalactite structures inside the domes. The water treatment took place further South, where the praefernium and the vaulted warm water basin are still preserved. Picture by Manuel Cohen
