The Rotonde de la Menagerie (rotunda of the menagerie) was built between 1804 and 1812 by Jacques Molinos at the request of Napoleon. Originally, the rosette shaped building inspired by the Legion d'Honneur medal, was intended to house big cats but ended up housing large herbivores instead. Located in the Jardin des Plantes, Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, 5th arrondissement, France. Founded in 1794 by Jacques Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, the Menagerie of Jardin des Plantes became the largest exotic animal collection in Europe in the 19th century and is the second oldest public zoo in the world.
