Nacera Kainou is French contemporary sculptor and painter who was chosen by the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle to create the statue as a memorial to Theodore Monod at his death in 2000. Founded in 1626 by Guy de La Brosse, Louis XIII's physician, the Jardin des Plantes, originally known as the Jardin du Roi, opened to the public in 1640.
